Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost to ship an 8x10 rug?

Rugs 8x10 or larger are shipped using our White Glove Consolidated shipping service, which typically starts at $750. The exact cost of your rug shipment will depend on the size of the rug you’re shipping, the distance it will travel, and any special considerations such as antique fibers or custom crating. It may not be worth it to ship inexpensive or easily replaceable rugs unless it has sentimental value.

How do I wrap a rug for shipping?

For rugs smaller than 8x10, follow these steps to get your rug ready to ship:

  1. Clean your rug. The last thing you want is dirt and debris rolled up in your rug. Vacuum your rug prior to shipment, or if the rug is especially soiled, have it professionally laundered. Make sure your rug is completely dry before packing it up.
  2. Roll the rug around the PVC pipe. Roll tightly, but not too tight. A very tight roll could irreparably damage the fibers of the rug. If you hear cracking, stop and roll it a bit looser.
  3. Wrap the rug. Wrap the rolled-up rug in heavy plastic and secure the edges with packing tape.
  4. Label. Add a label with the destination address.

How do I fold a rug for shipping?

To fold a rug for shipping, follow these steps:

  1. Clean your rug. The last thing you want is dirt and debris rolled up in your rug. Vacuum your rug prior to shipment, or if the rug is especially soiled, have it professionally laundered. Make sure your rug is completely dry before packing it up.
  2. Place the rug face down, so the pile side faces the floor.
  3. Fold one side of the rug over the other, lengthwise.
  4. Fold one end of the rug ¼ of the way to the center of the rug, then fold the other end of the rug over to meet it. If your rug is 8x10 or larger, repeat this step.
  5. Roll one end towards the other, then tie the roll with two strips of fabric. Avoid using string or rope as this will compress the rug fibers and leave an indentation.
  6. Wrap the rug in heavy plastic and secure the edges with packing tape, if needed.
  7. Label. Add a label with the destination address.

How do I pack oriental rugs?

Oriental rugs should always be rolled—they should never be folded. Follow these steps to pack an oriental rug:

  1. For precious oriental rugs, start by cleaning the rug and having it appraised.
  2. Lay the rug on a flat surface, with the pile side facing up. If the rug is very dense, rolling with the pile facing downward may be easier to prevent strain on the foundation or materials.
  3. Begin rolling the rug at one of the fringe ends, using even tension for the entire width. Tie the rolled rug with natural string (not tape or plastic), with loops at 12” intervals to keep the roll tight and secure.
  4. Wrap the rug in brown packing paper (not plastic) to offer further protection without trapping air and moisture inside.
