How Small Moves Cross Country Work

If you are truly shipping a small load, our logistics experts will likely recommend the White Glove Consolidated moving service. To ship packed boxes only (no furniture), our Box-And-Ship program is the most cost-effective choice. If you are moving an entire home long distance or need faster delivery, Full Service Expedited is often the best option. The exact cost of your small move will depend on the size and number of items you’re shipping, the distance they will travel, and any special considerations such as access limitations or fragile items with glass or delicate components.

What is a small move?

TSI considers any move under 3,500 pounds to be a small move. This could be as small as a single item of furniture or a few boxes, or as much as a 2+ bedroom home.

What do you consider a “long distance move”?

We consider any move over 150 miles a long distance move. Moves under 150 miles are typically considered “local moves”, and can usually be handled by local moving companies.

What is less-than-truckload shipping?

Less-than-truckload (LTL) shipping refers to shipments that don’t fill an entire truck. When you ship household goods using LTL shipping, your cargo will share space on the back of the truck with other goods heading in the same direction. This helps keep your costs low.

Why should I use less-than-truckload shipping for a long distance small move?

Long distance small moves typically don’t fill the back of an entire truck. Regardless of how much you’re moving, large van line movers will price your move using a minimum weight threshold—typically 3,500 pounds in the summer and 2,500 pounds in the winter. That means you’ll pay for space you are not using. 

TSI works with freight providers who specialize in something called “less-than-truckload shipping”. Most less-than-truckload freight providers won’t pick up cargo from private residences, but with our nationwide network of professional shippers, you can get personalized long distance small move shipping services, and you’ll only pay for the space your belongings take up on the truck.

How much does a small move cost?

With TSI, the cost of your move is typically based on weight and distance. Every job is different, but here are 2 examples to give you an idea:
- 1,000 lbs travelling from Philadelphia to Los Angeles with no special requirements (such as crating or indoor delivery) would cost about $2,900.
- 2,000 lbs travelling from Chicago to Orlando with no special requirements would cost about $3,394.

How long will it take to transport my belongings across the country?

If you are moving both furniture and boxes and are using a company like TSI that consolidates items going in the same direction onto the same truck, you can expect it to take 1-3 weeks for pickup and up to 4 additional weeks for delivery. If your pickup and destination locations are in well-traveled areas, this timeline could be much quicker. TSI also offers priority pickup options if you are moving on a short timeline.
